Custom Type III Mouth Guards Prevent Costly Sports-Related Dental Injuries
Each year, 3 to 5 million US children suffer sports injuries severe enough to require emergency room treatments, according to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation. Many of these students end up as part of the 15 million dental injuries that occur yearly. Any physical activity involves some risk, but injury rates are highest in impact sports.
The stock (Type I) mouth guards, while less costly, offer the least amount of protection because little can be done to adjust the fit. The boil and bite (Type II) mouth guards are readily available in sporting stores but require some adaptation to fit properly. Because of the less than ideal fit, they are not worn consistently, and often times end up outside of the mouth creating another issue of cleanliness.
Custom made (Type III) athletic mouth guards are superior to stock and boil/bite because they offer the best fit since they are constructed from plaster models of the athlete’s mouth. They also provide excellent protection and if taken care of properly will last for several years.
Here at Dr. Filler's office, we can help your son or daughter avoid costly sports-related dental injuries with a custom athletic mouth guard. Please call our office to set your appointment – 603-898-2072.
